Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has drawn a hard line on US trade negotiations, refusing any agreement that doesn’t resolve the 25% tariffs on Japanese auto imports. The automotive sector, responsible for Japan’s $63 billion trade surplus with America, remains a non-negotiable priority.

Despite being Washington’s closest Asian ally and largest foreign investor, Japan’s upper house elections in late July have effectively stalled progress. Ishiba’s unpopular government faces mounting domestic pressure, making concessions politically untenable during the campaign period.
